Construction
Soccer balls have 2 major components, the interior and exterior. The interior, also called the ball bladder, is an inflatable rubber casing that holds the ball’s air providing the ball’s shape and bounce. The exterior of the ball is the outer material that covers and protects the bladder. It provides the correct weight and material to be an official soccer ball.
Materials: The interior bladder of modern soccer balls are commonly made of either latex or butyl rubber, with very minor differences both suited for official use. In short, a butyl bladder typically stays inflated longer but has a harder feel while a latex bladder has a softer feel, preferred by a lot of professionals, but may not hold air as long as butyl. The exterior of modern soccer balls are commonly made of a synthetic leather, coated with PU (polyurethane), PVC, or a hybrid. This exterior creates the best ball feel for play while providing durability for long term use.
Design: Soccer balls can come in variety of designs made up by the pattern of panels on the ball’s exterior. Different panel designs can have an impact on the ball shape and flight, with continued evolutions aimed at creating the best ball for the sport. The most iconic and popular design, also known as the “Buckyball” , is made up of 32 panels, with 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons.
